Discover The Ziggurat: Sacramento's Iconic Pyramid Building
Nestled along the Sacramento River in West Sacramento, The Ziggurat stands as a striking 10-story office building with a stepped pyramid design inspired by ancient Mesopotamian architecture. Completed in 1997 by The Money Store, it now serves as the headquarters for the California Department of General Services since 2001. Its golden-yellow illumination at night, as seen in recent photos, highlights its unique terraced structure, making it a local landmark visible from the Tower Bridge. The building spans approximately 373,725 square feet and includes a five-story parking garage for over 1,600 vehicles. Designed by architect Edwin Kado, its symmetrical shape symbolizes stability and is engineered to withstand earthquakes up to magnitude 6.9. Often featured during Sacramento Kings games on TV, The Ziggurat remains a point of interest for both residents and visitors, blending modern functionality with architectural boldness. As of September 9, 2025, the building continues to draw attention for its distinctive look and historical significance in the region.
